AIM

Alcohol In Moderation was founded in 1981 as an independent organisation whose role is to communicate the sensible drinking message and to act as a conduit for information from the industry, associations and researchers on relevant research, legislation, policy and campaigns.  AIM’s mission is to -

ALCOHOL CONCERN

This site provides information on the work of Alcohol Concern, the national charity on alcohol misuse.  It offers detailed advice on sensible drinking and how to recognise problem drinking; describes the physical and psychological effects of alcohol; suggest what to do if you are worried about your own or someone else’s drinking; and offers tips on cutting down.  It provides access to Alcohol Concern’s factsheets and to its bookshop, and provides comprehensive signposting to local and national alcohol services.

BRITISH BEER & PUBS ASSOCIATION

The BBPA represents the brewing and pub sector in GB.  It’s members account for around 98% of the beer brewed in the UK and own more than half of Britain’s 60,000 pubs.  It aims to promote sensible and responsible drinking; to promote the social and connercial positives associated with brewing and pubs; represent and defend the sector before the Government in the UK and EU; and to protect the commercial freedom of members.

DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH, SOCIAL SERVICE AND PUBLIC SAFETY

The DHSSPSNI is the NI Government Department responsible for alcohol harm reduction policy in NI, under the auspices of the NI Alcohol & Drug Strategy.

The DSD is the NI Government Department responsible for licensing legislation.

DRINK & DRUG NEWS

This is a web portal provided by the Federation of Drug & Alcohol Professionals for people working in the drugs and alcohol field.  It also offers training listings, research and guidance for practitioners, and articles on drug and alcohol issues.

DRINKAWARE

This is a unique site featuring an interactive unit calculator with real brands; a self assessment test; and lots of hints and tips on responsible drinking. It contains all sorts of useful information about alcohol and drinking for all ages and all occassions.  It is managed by the Drinkaware Trust, a unique partnership involving medics, alcohol charities and the drinks industry.

Consumer site about sensible drinking, including national government guidelines for the UK, USA, Canada, France, Spain and Germany.

DRUG & ALCOHOL INFORMATION

This is the NI Public Health Agency’s decicated drug and alcohol information site.  It was developed with the support of the NI Drug & Alcohol Campaign, funded by DHSSPSNI and is aimed at professionals.  (NB – the PHA is currently re-developing its web presence.  If this link is unavailable, please visit www.publichealth.hscni.net)

DRUG EDUCATION & PREVENTION INFORMATION SERVICE

This GB site provides information on drug and alcohol education materials for professionals.  The activities on this site are designed for working with young people aged 11-25 and cover peer education, information development, Theatre in Education and much more.

FEDERATION OF THE RETAIL LICENSED TRADE NI

FRLT is the only voice for the retail licensed trade in NI, representing around 1,100 pubs, hotels and restaurants.  Its history dates back to 1872.  FRLT’s objectives are -

INSTITUTE OF ALCOHOL STUDIES

The IAS, supported by the UK Temperance Alliance, aims to increase knowledge of alcohol and the social and health consequences of its misuse.

KNOW YOUR LIMITS

This site, run by NI’s Public Health Agency, aims to encourage everyone to drink responsibily and to be aware of the consequences of drinking to excess.  It aims to educate on all aspects of alcohol consumption and sensible drinking limits – for all ages and occassions.

LICENSED VINTNERS ASSOCIATION

The LVA is the trade association and representative body for the publicans of Dublin. It is one of the oldest trade associations in the country with an unbroken history tracing back to its foundation in 1817.  The purpose of the LVA is to represent the publicans of Dublin and to protect and promote their strategic business interests.  The LVA has approximately 700 members and collectively represents well over 90% of all publicans in Dublin.  Pubs play a pivotal role in the business, social and cultural life of our Capital city.

MEAS

MEAS, the Irish word for “respect”, is the working name for Mature Enjoyment of Alcohol in Society.  MEAS promotes social responsibility among producers, marketers, distributors and retailers of alcohol in Ireland; and, in partnership with Government and other appropriate bodies, it promotes the mature, sensible and appropriate enjoyment of alcohol in society.

NI FEDERATION OF CLUBS

The Federation exists to cater for the needs of private member non profit-making clubs in Northern Ireland, acting as a lobbying body in all matters related to legislation and regulations pertaining to clubs.

NI HOTELS FEDERATION

The hospitality industry in Northern Ireland has had a collective body since 1922 with the Federation being incorporated in 1999 to specifically focus on the accommodation sector.  The Northern Ireland Hotels Federation is a not-for-profit limited company representing the hotel and guesthouse sectors in Northern Ireland; it’s main roles are identifying and reviewing issues affecting the hospitality industry and lobbying governments and the NI Assembly on the economic and employment opportunities of tourism. Developing services for the benefit of the industry, the Federation actively works in partnership with others to create the right conditions for tourism.

PORTMAN GROUP

The Portman Group is supported by the UK’s leading drinks producers.  It is concerned solely with the social responsibility issues surrounding alcohol.  Its role is -

SCOTTISH WHISKY ASSOCIATION

The SWA promotes, protects and represents the interests of the whisky industry in Scotland and around the world.  It has a Code of Practice which sets minimum standards for the promotion of Scotch Whisky brands.

VFI

The Vintners Federation of Ireland exists to organise, promote and protect the interests of licensees in the Republic of Ireland, outside Dublin City Centre (see LVA). It has over 5,000 members.

WINE & SPIRIT TRADE ASSOCIATION

The WSTA represents the wine and spirit supply chain in the UK, including producers, importers, wholesalers, bottlers, warehouse keepers, freight forwarders, brand owners, licensed retailers and consultants.  It was established in 1824 and has over 300 members.  It works with its members to promote the responsible production, marketing and sale of alcohol.  It manages the Retail of Alcohol Standards Group which pioneered the Challenge 21 initiative (materials can be downloaded free of charge).
